Motion Graphs: Slope vs Area
The graph-reading habit that saves students from mixing up position, velocity, and acceleration.
Slope tells you the next motion quantity
On a position-time graph, slope gives velocity. On a velocity-time graph, slope gives acceleration.
The habit is simple: read the graph label first, then ask what its slope physically means.
Area tells you the accumulated quantity
On a velocity-time graph, area gives displacement. On an acceleration-time graph, area gives change in velocity.
Students get into trouble when they memorize one rule without checking the graph labels. Slope and area are useful because of the units they produce.
A quick check
If the graph is velocity versus time, the slope units are meters per second per second, so the slope is acceleration. The area units are meters per second times seconds, so the area is meters.
